The proposal is to demolish the existing bungalow that occupies the site and create a development comprising 14No. two-bedroom flats accommodated within three separate blocks. Two of these blocks are to be located on the southern side of the site fronting the river, with the third located at the northern end of the site close to Fen Road. The proposed vehicular access is to be via Fen View Court.
The proposed buildings have been conceived as near identical, simple gable-ended forms that not only reflect the massing of Fen View Court adjacent, but also numerous boathouse typologies found along the River Cam. Together, they attempt to create a coherent form of development on this stretch of river frontage. The simple forms also echo an agricultural typology which is considered to be appropriate for this semi-rural location. Internally, the flats have been laid out with the main open-plan living/dining/kitchen area given a southerly aspect to take advantage of views across Stourbridge Common. This principal elevation incorporates recessed balconies on each level, with the amount of glazing maximised.
The proposal has wider public benefits, notably facilitating improvements to the Fen Road level crossing and enabling works' access for the construction of the new cycle bridge across the river in this key location. Construction is due to commence in the summer of 2018.
