Project Description
This modest project converted three lock-up garages (formally storage sheds) into 2No. dwellings on a limited budget. With a limited footprint and outlook, the challenge was to create two residential units that kept the integrity of the existing structure and provided a good standard of living accommodation.
This was achieved by providing living accommodation on the first floor within a vaulted roof space with views out through the roof lights and low level windows at floor level, with bedroom and bathroom accommodation on the ground floor.
The modulation of the doors (with fan lights above) was retained and new industrial sliding doors were installed on the end bays. These sliding doors close off the entrance porches, which also serve as cycle stores, and help to conceal the domestic use. The graphics used for the house numbering were specifically oversized to continue the industrial theme. The external materials (i.e. bricks and roof tiles) were all reused from the existing structure for reasons of conservation and sustainability.
We consider that this project provides a good example of what can be done with such modestly sized buildings whose contribution to the fabric of the conservation area is often overlooked.
