Project Description
This scheme involved the creation of 17No. flats and 4No. houses following the demolition of a terrace of three units on Mill Road and one on Montreal Road. Although situated within a Conservation Area, it was accepted by the local planning authority that the existing buildings were in a poor state of repair and that there was a clear opportunity for enhancement.
The design approach was to maintain the historic character of the elevation on Mill Road (partly achieved by re-using the existing bricks and detailing) to enhance the design at the prominent corner junction with Montreal Road and to continue a more contemporary terraced built-form along Montreal Road itself.
The Mill Road and Montreal Road buildings accommodate the flats which are set around a rear communal garden area whilst the houses are set in a semi-detached form in a rear portion of the site, accessed via an archway on Montreal Road. The first floor flats are duplex units which utilise the loft area as open plan living/kitchen accommodation.
