Project Description
This scheme for 14No. apartments replaced a pair of semi-detached houses. The building-line was required to be similar to that of the previous property, resulting in an angled form which addressed the corner and maintained the relationship with the junction opposite.
The building is three storeys in height with a flat roof on the corner, and with the third storey element set back behind a parapet and clad in a contrasting material to reduce the perceived scale. The massing then steps down onto Akeman Street to respond to the scale of the domestic properties on this side.
The design is intended to mediate between the smaller scale domestic properties of Akeman Street and the larger scale commercial nature of Histon Road, providing a distinctive building on this prominent corner site. The 14No. flats comprise of 2No. Studio flats, 11No. 1-bedroom flats and 1No. 2-bedroom flat. These are accessed from a central stairwell with the principal outlook onto Histon Road or Akeman Street. This scheme was the first 'car free' residential development outside the City Centre’s controlled parking zone.
