Project Description

Chalk Glade is a somewhat unique site in Cambridge as it is situated within a former quarry. The dwellings have been conceived as simple interlocking rectangular volumes set into the side of the excavation. These volumes are a combination of single and two-storeys, set above the lower ground floor/basement parking level. A plain masonry wall runs full height to one side of each plot to retain a vertical emphasis within the quarry and also provide a face for climbing plants. Large window openings have been used to maximise the amount of daylight and to make the most of views from within the building. The palette of materials has been selected to help integrate the buildings into the environment. The masonry walls will be constructed of a weathered off-white brick to echo the exposed chalk geology. The cladding will be a pre-patinated zinc to echo the verdant setting. Window openings on the front elevation are to be glazed in a reflective glass intended to provide reflections of the tree canopy on the façade. New retaining walls will be constructed with stone filled gabions. Planning permission was obtained at appeal. The inspector, in his decision, noted “The modern approach to the proposed design with the use of strong and simple geometric shapes would be a positive feature in itself. To my mind therefore, whilst it would be partially visible from Lime Kiln Road, the proposed development would make a positive contribution to the site”. The houses are currently on the market with Carter Jonas.
