Project Description

This site is curtilage listed, and forms an important part of the local conservation area on the northern edge of the village. The proposed barn conversion provides 7 dwellings, bringing into re-use, upgraded and refurbished, otherwise redundant agricultural buildings. The proposal seeks to convert the existing buildings sensitively, with minimal alterations to the external appearance and intentions to retain and enhance the C19 farmstead. The open courtyard’s character has been a guiding principle of the design and we have aimed to avoid a domesticated appearance. Where necessary, hedges with estate fencing and brick walls have been chosen to define boundaries. The internal layouts of all of the dwellings have been informed by the location of existing openings to minimise the insertion of additional windows and doors. Where new openings have been felt necessary, they have been kept on less prominent aspects, retaining the important characteristics of the agricultural buildings. Where existing buildings have been open-sided, a more contemporary approach has been adopted to infill the façade. The proposal has won the support of the conservation officer and planning consent is expected in the near future.
